RSE Curriculum

Relationship and Sex Education at Launde Primary School

At Launde Primary School, we believe that the experiences children have during their formative years shape the people they become. Because school plays such a central role in this stage of life, we are committed to working in genuine partnership with parents to ensure children develop the knowledge, values and personal skills they need to flourish now and in the future.

Our RSE curriculum is designed to help children build healthy friendships, positive relationships and a strong sense of self‑respect, while developing empathy and understanding for the diverse world they live in. Children are taught how to discuss ideas sensitively, value different viewpoints and behave respectfully—even when they disagree.

Our Aims

In line with our school RSE policy, our RSE curriculum aims to:

  • Provide a safe framework for open, age‑appropriate discussion.
  • Prepare pupils for the physical and emotional changes of puberty.
  • Teach the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies.
  • Develop self‑esteem, confidence and the ability to make informed choices.
  • Build a positive, respectful culture around relationships and growing up.
  • Promote inclusivity, diversity and respect for all families and communities.

RSE at Launde is delivered as an integrated part of our PSHE curriculum, following the PSHE Association guidance, ensuring children receive a well‑sequenced, statutory‑compliant and developmentally appropriate programme.

The statutory Government guidance that we must follow can be found at:

Relationship Education

Relationships Education will put in place the building blocks needed for positive and safe relationships, including with family, friends and online.

Your child will be taught what a relationship is, what friendship is, what family means and who can support them. In an age-appropriate way, your child’s school will cover how to treat each other with kindness, consideration and respect.

By the end of primary school, pupils will have been taught content about:

  • Families and People who Care for me
  • Caring Friendships
  • Respectful Relationships
  • Online Relationships
  • Being Safe

Health Education

Health Education aims to give your child the information they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing, to recognise issues in themselves and others, and to seek support as early as possible when issues arise.

By the end of primary school, pupils will have been taught content on:

  • Mental Wellbeing
  • Internet Safety
  • Physical Health and Fitness
  • Healthy Eating and Lifestyles
  • Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco - Facts and Risks
  • Health and Prevention
  • Basic First Aid
  • Changing Adolescent Body

What are your Parental Rights?

The important lessons you teach your child about healthy relationships, looking after themselves and staying safe, are respected and valued under Launde's PSHE Curriculum. Teaching at school will complement and reinforce the lessons you teach your child as they grow up.

At Launde Primary School, it’s important to us that we progress our plans for RSE alongside your views as parents and develop and renew our policies on Relationships Education accordingly.

The Right to Withdraw

You cannot withdraw your child from Relationships Education because it is important that all children receive this content, covering topics such as friendships and how to stay safe.

If you do not want your child to take part in some or all of the lessons on Sex Education, you can ask that they are withdrawn. At primary level, the Headteacher must grant this request.

The science curriculum in all maintained schools also includes content on human development, including reproduction, which there is no right to withdraw from. If you want to know more about what will be taught as part of the RSE and Science, the best thing to do is look at our curriculum pages on the website, speak to your child's class teacher about any concerns and also read our RSE policy, our Personal Development curriculum, Science Knowledge organiser and the documents below from Gov.UK:
