Sports over the Autumn Term

Please read below about all of the amazing sports people we have at Launde!!
The Autumn term saw the introduction of a number of sports clubs and events that children have taken part in:
- KS2 Running Club: 30 children across KS2 took part in this club after school every Monday. The children always run their hardest and never give up. The purpose of this club is to teach the children about maintaining their pace and avoid walking, even when they are tired. Of the 30 children, half of these went on to represent Launde at running events held at Coombe Park, running distances over 1km. Well done to all involved.
- Launde Girls’ and Boys’ Football Clubs: After undertaking trials in September, a number of our year 5 and 6 children were selected to take part in the Launde Football Club.
The children have spent most of the Autumn term training with Mr Jones, with the expectation of playing competitive games this term. However, the girls increased their competition experience by playing in a tournament in October and the boys have so far played one league game against Brockshill, with more to come.
- Big Moves intervention: 15 of our youngest children were invited to take part in this, organised by the Sports Partnership, to help them with their movement skills. This in turn, helps them in class too. A member of our staff shadowed the instructor, in order to continue this intervention with other children, who would benefit from such exposure to physical activity.
- Trigolf: at the beginning of the Autumn term, our children were given the opportunity to take part in this event, which introduced the children to the sport of golf. Although participation was low from our school, the children who attended enjoyed themselves and will hopefully pursue this game further.
- Sports Ambassadors and Playground Leaders: a number of our children in years 5 and 6 volunteered for these roles, in order to organise activities for their peers at lunch times. The children are very enthusiastic when running lunch time activities, helping their peers towards achieving their 60 active minutes per day. The sports ambassadors have planned a series of fun activities but we are waiting for the weather to improve to introduce them.
- KS2 Wheelchair Basketball: eight of our children across KS2 took part in this event. It was great to see how engaged the children were when playing wheel chair basketball and also helped them understand how people with physical disability are able to excel at sport too. There were lots of smiles when the children were using the wheelchairs, designed especially for sports.
- Let’s Get Moving Festival: Our final even of the term was held at Parklands. Eleven of our children across KS2 participated, having fun whilst taking part in boccia (a sport very similar to bowls), wheelchair basketball. They also had the opportunity to use the soft play area and enjoyed the activities thoroughly.
As the weather begins to improve, more event opportunities will be available over the spring term and eventually the summer term. Please keep an eye on WEDUC for event invites.
